Community Counts

JLE-NS' Community Counts Committee works on, at least, several mini-projects during a League year. This year they are:

Working with Links "Young Parent Mentor Program" to support four theme-based holiday events through out the year.  We provide childcare for the babies and toddlers.  We also cater the event and create fun interactive crafts for the children and their moms.

  • Links - North Shore Youth Health Service empowers young people to take responsibility for their health, well-being and sexuality through education and prevention. Their services include medical treatment and counseling for young women and men, community education, support services for sexual minority youth, and a mentor program for adolescent parents.

A private, non-profit organization, Links has been helping young people find answers to difficult questions for over 30 years. Links provides that help in a caring, confidential and nonjudgmental way. Their website is www.linksyouth.org.

Working with Girls on the Run to:

    • Provide snacks to a selected participating school during their Fall and Spring training
    • Support the Halloween Trick or Treat 5K run in October and the Wondergirl 5K run in June.

    Girls on the Run
In 2004, JLE-NS partnered with our local Girls on the Run Council. Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Their curricula address all aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.

Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) is the parent organization of more than 100 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada. GOTRI establishes trains and supports a network of community-level councils with local volunteers. The volunteers serve as role models to the girls through coaching the 12-week, 24 lesson curricula. The curriculum is delivered in these areas through after-school programs, recreation centers and other non-profit settings. Their website is www.girlsontherun.org.

Working with the Evanston YMCA to support two community events – Santa International Day and Healthy Kids Day.

    ·         Santa International Day is a family day hosted by the McGraw YMCA in Evanston, where kids learn about winter holidays of other cultures.  We participated by hosting an interactive booth and designing and providing the materials for the kids to make their own holiday crafts.

    ·         Healthy Kids Day is a national YMCA program that gives families the opportunity to learn more about adopting healthy lifestyles through fun activities and informational booths.  We incorporated our national Kids in the Kitchen program by hosting a booth focused on nutrition and exercise.
